We will studying some basic background and facts to kick off our unit on Ireland. Please read the following:
- The CIA World Factbook on Ireland (be sure to click through the drop-down menus like “Introduction” and “Geography”)
- The Bedford Book of Genres pg. 108-115 “Encyclopaedia Entries”
- Encyclopaedia Britannica Online entry for Ireland
Although you do not have any written homework, you should be prepared to comment on the readings. In class, we will build of Wednesday’s discussion of genre and the rhetorical situation. As you read, note the rhetorical situation of each source and the ways in which it conforms to the generic conventions listed in our textbook. In class, I’ll also ask you which facts about Ireland surprised you, and which supported your previous knowledge of the country.
